The FBI, the United States’ federal investigative agency, has classified the apparent assassination attempt on Donald Trump as “extremely serious,” according to Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey B. Veltri of the FBI Miami.
The agency is “determined to provide answers as to what led to the events that occurred,” Veltri said, noting that they are now working to obtain search warrants for the vehicle, cellphone and other devices of Ryan Wesley Routh, a suspect arrested in connection with the case.
“So far, the warrants include a video recording device, the subject’s cellular devices, a vehicle and other electronic devices located at previously known addresses,” he noted.
The official also said the FBI had interviewed “seven civilian witnesses,” noting that “this is just the beginning.”
Veltri said FBI field offices in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Charlotte, North Carolina, are also working to interview “several of the subject’s family members, friends and former colleagues.”
“Active online presence”
Ryan Wesley Routh had an “active online presence,” Veltri said. The FBI is reviewing all of the suspect’s online posts and search history.
“We are looking into media reports and public statements he has made that he wanted to recruit Afghan and other soldiers to fight for Ukraine,” he said.
“The FBI has sent multiple requests to companies seeking information about the subject’s phone and social media accounts,” it added.
Routh has criticized Trump on social media and is a vocal supporter of Ukraine. Cellphone data from the individual indicates he may have spent nearly 12 hours near the area where he was seen in the bushes, according to charging documents unsealed Monday.
