The United States Department of Justice has hired an experienced prosecutor specializing in computer crimes to lead its new national crypto-crime team and announced that the FBI is launching a unit for blockchain analysis and seizure of virtual assets.
The creation of the unit was made after the largest seizure of financial resources ever carried out by the Department of Justice. The department earlier this month accused a New York couple of allegedly laundering bitcoins currently valued at more than $4.5 billion that were stolen in 2016 from exchange Bitfinex.
The United States has increased scrutiny over the cryptocurrency industry after a series of major attacks last year that targeted the country’s largest pipeline network.
In a speech at the Cybersecurity Conference in Munich, Germany, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco announced that Eun Young Choi, who led the case against a Russian hacker who helped steal information on more than 80 million JPMorgan, will lead the department’s cryptocurrency team.
“We also appeal to all companies dealing with cryptocurrencies – we need you to stop the abuses of cryptocurrencies. For those who don’t, we will hold them accountable whenever we can,” Monaco said.
