Fear of future 8 or 9 magnitude mega earthquake in Japan

A Japanese government committee warns that there is an 82% chance that the archipelago will be hit by a magnitude 8 or 9 mega-earthquake within 30 years. The Earthquake Research Committee estimated that the probability of such an earthquake striking in the next three decades is between 75 and 82%, while this hairpin was between 74 and 81% until yesterday. If such an earthquake occurs, it could hit much of Japan’s Pacific coast, threaten 300,000 Japanese people and cause billions of dollars worth of damage, according to its estimates. The undersea Nankai Fault, which runs parallel to the eastern Japanese coast for 800 kilometers from the city of Shizuoka (west of the capital Tokyo) to the island of Kyushu (south), is attracting particular attention: it is thought to produce magnitude 8 and 9 earthquakes every 100 as 200 years.
