More than 60 people are believed to have died as a result of the capsized boat Immigrants which had departed in early July from Senegal and was spotted off its coast on Monday Cape Verde, announced today a representative of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The number of victims is estimated at 63, while 38 are survivors, among them four children aged 12-16, Safa Mesli told the AFP news agency and relays the Athens News Agency.
In addition to the 38 survivors, search and rescue crews recovered seven bodies, the IOM spokeswoman said.
According to survivors’ testimoniesthe vessel had departed on July 10 from Fas Boi in western Senegal, “with 101 passengers”.
The vessel was spotted on Monday by a Spanish fishing vessel about 150 nautical miles (227 km) from Sal Island, police in Cape Verde, an island nation nearly 600 km off the coast of Senegal, said.
