Fears of possible leakage of radioactivity at a Chinese nuclear power plant

CNN reported information about a possible leak of radioactivity at the facility. This was followed by an announcement by Framatome, a subsidiary of the French group EDF, which noted that it was monitoring the “evolution of one of the operating parameters” of the Taishan nuclear power plant in the south. China.

According to Framatome, which participated in the construction of the Chinese nuclear power plant, the nuclear power plant “is within the permitted operating and safety framework”, Framatome said in a statement.

The station’s two reactors are currently the only compressed water (EPR) reactors in operation in the world. Other such reactors are manufactured in Finland, France and the United Kingdom.

CNN, as reported by the Athens News Agency, based on a letter sent by Framatome to the US Department of Energy, spoke for possible “leakage” at the Chinese nuclear power plant, which operates two EPR reactors of French technology, manufactured by EDF.

According to the American information network, the Chinese security authorities invoked the acceptable, within the limits prices radioactivity outside the nuclear power plant to prevent it from shutting down.

“Framatome supports the analysis of the evolution of one of the operating parameters of the Taisan nuclear power plant,” the French company said, without mentioning “leakage” and without specifying which operating parameters are under monitoring.

“Based on the information available, the department is within the permitted operating and safety framework,” Framatome said, without elaborating.

For its part, China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN), which operates the nuclear power plant, said in a statement that environmental indicators are “normal”, without making direct reference to CNN information.

“Currently, continuous monitoring of environmental data shows that the environmental indicators of the Taiwan nuclear power plant and the surrounding area are normal,” said the Chinese group, which declined to answer AFP questions.

But neither did the Chinese Foreign Ministry answer the French Agency’s questions.

In France, the government, the Committee on Atomic Energy and Alternative Energy (CEA), the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) and the EDF have not yet commented on the incident.
