Fed official says open to three or more rate hikes in US

Atlanta Federal Reserve Chairman Raphael Bostic said on Thursday he was “very open” to raising the key interest rate “three times or more” over the course of a year. 2022 as the economy evolves.

At a Conference on Banking Perspective, organized by the Atlanta Fed, Bostic said he supported the US central bank to act to lower the level of inflation.

“I will be monitoring inflation month by month and I hope it will fall. If that happens, we can be less aggressive in raising basic interest rates”, said the leader, who has no voting power in monetary decisions this year.

Bostic noted that labor markets are “very tight” in the United States and that inflation remains high.

He said it was also necessary to monitor the easing of supply bottlenecks. “Will it happen in 2022 or later? It will also imply inflation and how people will respond.”

The official defended that the balance sheet of the North American central bank “definitely” is reduced. He said he still expects to see “some interest rate hikes” before the reduction begins.

Bostic also said that Fed officials are monitoring the situation in Ukraine “closely”, in order to assess the economic and financial impacts of the crisis.
