The Federal Reserve (FED), the US Central Bank, has deleted the Diversity and Inclusion section from its website. Additionally, links to a statement of the agency’s diversity standards and data on the racial, ethnic and gender composition of its economists and researchers now redirect to the home page.
The Fed declined to comment on the change or the implications for its hiring and recruiting practices.
According to versions of the US central bank website available on the specialized website Wayback Machine, the change occurred in the days immediately before or shortly after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, on Monday (20).
Trump, in one of his first actions as president, signed an executive order banning Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs. He also ended the use of these policies in federal hiring and contracts.
In addition, all federal civil servants in the diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility sectors will be placed on “paid administrative leave” – that is, they will be suspended, but will continue to receive a salary for the time being.
Finding ways to diversify hiring has been a long-standing issue at the central bank, which relies heavily on a profession that has largely struggled to produce a pipeline of researchers and doctoral degree holders that are more reflective of the population.
“Throughout my career in both the public and private sectors, I have observed that the best and most successful organizations are often those that have a strong and persistent commitment to diversity and inclusion,” said Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, at a 2021 conference on the subject.
“We are working to promote an inclusive work environment in which employees can feel comfortable at work, and to promote an equally inclusive culture within the profession,” he said.
Powell further highlighted the Fed’s efforts “to broaden our reach by recruiting from historically black colleges and universities and Hispanic-serving institutions.”
