Federal base installed in Yanomami territory is target of attack in Roraima

The federal base installed in the village of Palimiú, in Yanomami territory, in Roraima, was the target of an attack early this Thursday (23). Armed men broke through the blockade set up on the Urariocera River and shot at IBAMA agents who boarded one of the vessels.

The inspectors returned the attack. One of the prospectors was injured and ended up being detained by the Federal Police (PF) for attacking public servants. He was inernated until tonight.

The criminals went down the river in seven boats called “voadeiras” with 12 meters carrying cassiterite – tin ore.

The material was stolen from the indigenous land and identified by Ibama drones. After the action, the men fled.

The base, set up on February 7, has the objective of preventing the entry of boats carrying supplies and equipment for miners into Yanomami territory.

Its security is carried out by agents of the National Public Security Force, the Federal Highway Police and Ibama.

According to Rodrigo Agostinho, president of Ibama, “It was a programmed criminal attack. Anyone who tries to break through the blockade will be arrested. Ending illegal mining is a determination of President Lula”.
