In a meeting between ministers of the federal government with the governor of Roraima, Antônio Denárium, a working group was created to establish short, medium and long term actions to face the humanitarian crisis of the Yanomami indigenous peoples, this Thursday (2).
The Public Defender’s Office of Amazonas also asked for help to assist ethnic people who suffer from insecurity, hunger and disease in the state.
Ministers Rui Costa, from the Civil House, Alexandre Padilha, from Institutional Relations and the governor of Roraima participated in the meeting.
Denárium was criticized by indigenous leaders for the lack of actions.
During the meeting, the creation of a working group was defined to meet the health, safety and development demands of the state. Federal, state and municipal governments will participate.
The Yanomami have been facing a humanitarian crisis that has been accentuated by the illegal activity of mining in indigenous lands.
The Yanomami Lands occupy an area of 9.6 million hectares that pass through the states of Roraima, Amazonas and reach Venezuela.
This week, Funai restricted the access of health professionals to the Yanomami land, in Roraima.
The change aims at “protection and respect for indigenous peoples during the confrontation of the Public Health Emergency of National Importance”, according to the Foundation.
Now, access will be defined by the Public Health Emergency Operations Center.
Public servants on a mission to the region will have to present a complete vaccination schedule, including the vaccine against Covid-19, a certificate of medical evaluation that proves the absence of an infectious disease and a test against the virus carried out 24 hours before.
The Public Defender of the State of Amazonas warned that since 2021 it has been denouncing the precarious situation of the Yanomami peoples in the state.
There were no responses or actions by public entities.
The inclusion of indigenous peoples in the Emergency Health Care was requested due to the increase in cases of undernutrition, malaria and preventable diseases.
There are records of the lack of basic supplies in the public health network, such as vitamin D. There is still no response to the Defender’s request.
The communities of São Gabriel da Cachoeiras, Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and Barcelos are the most affected.
Data from the Garrison Hospital of São Gabriel da Cachoeira show that 85 of the 395 hospitalizations of children up to 5 years old were of the Yanomami ethnic group.
The Xoromawé Indigenous Association also denounced the precarious situation in Amazonas.
