The federal government recognized, this Tuesday (2), the emergency situation in 31 cities in Bahia, Ceará, Pará, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.
According to a list published in the Official Gazette of the Union, the main factor is drought, which affects more than half of the municipalities mentioned.
According to the ordinance published by the National Secretariat for Protection and Civil Defense, of the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development (MIDR), the state with the largest number of recognized cities was Paraíba, with 11 affected by the drought: Livramento, Diamante, Cuité, Areial , Salgado de São Félix, Poço Dantas, Cacimba de Areia, Seridó, São José dos Cordeiros, Junco do Seridó and São José de Princesa.
In Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Sul, six municipalities were recognized for each state.
In the northeastern territory, Caetés, Pombos, Passira, Exu, Brejinho and Pedra also face severe drought.
The Rio Grande do Sul cities of Ijuí, Alegrete, Pinheirinho do Vale, Rodeio Bonito, Rondinha and Nova Roma do Sul were listed due to intense rains and flash floods.
Other municipalities that had a recognized emergency situation thanks to the drought are Cordeiros, Condeúba and Contendas do Sincorá, in Bahia; Caucaia, in Ceará; and Chaves, in Pará.
In the southern region of the country, the cities of Balneário Gaivota, Paial and Araquari, in Santa Catarina, were covered by the ordinance due to the heavy rains they faced.
Last Tuesday (26), another 53 municipalities had already been recognized by the federal government. The previous ordinance also listed Paraíba as the state with the most cities listed — at the time, there were 19.
Municipalities in Alagoas, Goiás, Pernambuco, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Bahia, Rio Grande do Sul and Rio Grande do Norte were also mentioned.
Why recognition is important
According to information from MIDR, cities in an emergency situation or state of public calamity recognized by the National Civil Defense are able to request resources from the ministry to provide assistance to the affected population.
“The actions involve relief, assistance to victims, restoration of essential services and reconstruction of destroyed or damaged infrastructure”, informs the ministry.
