Dry and poor air quality

The air quality in the city of Manaus, capital of Amazonas, has once again been seriously compromised due to smoke from the fires that have hit several parts of the state in recent weeks.

According to the Electronic Environmental Surveillance Service (Selva) platform, from the State University of Amazonas, air quality reached 191.4* concentration of fine inhalable particles at 2:55 pm on Wednesday (11). According to the measurement, the level is classified as “very bad” when it reaches 125.

The state of Amazonas is currently experiencing an environmental problem. In addition to the severe drought that affects the region, the fires have caused smoke to take over several cities in Amazonas, including the capital.

According to data from INPE, in the last two days, more than 500 fires were recorded throughout Amazonas. In the city of Autazes alone, which is just over 100 km from Manaus, there were more than 100 outbreaks. This represents more than 20% of the total statewide.

*Data from the Selva platform refer to fine inhalable particles (PM2.5), following the air quality measurement determination established by the National Environmental Council, in resolution 491/2018.
