Federal Police fulfill 162 warrants against organization that works in cigarette smuggling

This Thursday (9) the Federal Police fulfills warrants in the Capital operation, which seeks to dismantle a criminal organization that acts in the transport of smuggled cigarettes in the region of Guaíra, on the border between Paraná and Paraguay, and moved R$3, 8 million a day with smuggled goods.

The action takes place in the cities of Guaíra, Terra Roxa, Iporã, Francisco Alves, Umuarama, Cafezal do Sul and Altônia, in Paraná, and also in Balneário Camboriú, in Santa Catarina.

162 warrants are being carried out, 96 of which for search and seizure and 66 for preventive detention, issued by the 1st Federal Court of Guaíra, plus the kidnapping of 31 properties and the blockade on behalf of the organization’s leaders.

The PF, in seven months of investigation, managed to produce a large body of evidence, including showing that the organization handled about 750,000 packs of cigarettes in just one night, whose estimated value is more than R$3 million.

The group has more than 100 people, most of them “scouts”, who alert criminals about the movement of the police. Leaders, pilots and other stakeholders were identified.

According to investigations, the group enticed military police officers, who were paid with bribes to facilitate the organization’s activities, providing information about the security forces, turning a blind eye to what was happening and providing cover for criminals.

Those involved must answer for the crimes of smuggling, criminal organization and active and passive corruption, with sentences that exceed 25 years in prison. The Military Police of the State of Paraná and SEOPI/MJSP also participate in the operation. The name of the operation refers to the way criminals refer to the city of Altônia, in Paraná.
