Federal Police investigate third party involved in disappearance in Amazonas

The Federal Police reported that Amarildo Oliveira da Costa, known as Pelado, confessed that he helped to bury the bodies of English journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian indigenist Bruno Araújo Pereira, who disappeared in the region of Atalaia do Norte, in Vale do Javari, in Amazonas. He told the PF that he did not shoot and did not hear the shots either. A third person would have fired the shots at the pair.

According to the testimony of the suspect, arrested since last week on suspicion of involvement in the disappearance of the pair, since the 5th, Pereira worked to combat illegal fishing in the region – known for concentrating most of the isolated tribes in the Amazon – and this would have been the motive for the crime.

He reported in the deposition that the bodies of the indigenist and the British man were burned, quartered and buried. He would have said who this third party is involved, which has not yet been revealed by the PF.

Pelado had his temporary arrest for 30 days decreed last Thursday (9) after the PF found traces of blood on his vessel. He was arrested in flagrante delicto for possession of restricted-use ammunition. since the day before.

On Tuesday (14) the PF arrested Oseney da Costa de Oliveira, Pelado’s brother, also for the duo in Atalaia. He underwent a custody hearing today, which “was related to the fulfillment of the temporary arrest decreed by this court, at the request of the police authority”, according to Judge Jacinta Silva dos Santos.

The period of 30 days of temporary detention, which can be extended for another 30 days, takes effect from the date of execution of the warrant. The case is being processed under secrecy of justice.
