Federal prisons will have daily searches of cells, courtyards and parlors

The National Secretariat for Penal Policies of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security sent a series of recommendations to the management of the five federal prisons to prevent new incidents, such as the one that occurred in Mossoró, in Rio Grande do Norte, in which two inmates escaped.

Among the measures is the mandatory daily searches of all cells, courtyards and parlors — where prisoners have contact with family members. The determinations were published in an ordinance on Tuesday night (20).

Prison units were also instructed to immediately replace video surveillance cameras with low image quality, as well as those that are not working.

The document also requests that the structures of the luminaires inside the cells be reinforced, in a way that makes it impossible or difficult for inmates to remove them. It was from this place that the inmates escaped in Mossoró.

Another guideline concerns the increase in the number of employees available in penitentiaries. The decision is for criminal police officers stationed at the institution's headquarters to be mobilized and ongoing missions to be suspended.

In the end, the document determines that the five prisons be inspected “on site”, with the aim of carrying out a “technical building inspection report” for all existing structures.

Unprecedented escape

On Wednesday (14), Rogério Mendonça and Deibson Nascimento escaped through the roof of the maximum security federal prison in Mossoró.

It is the first time that an escape has been recorded in the Federal Penitentiary System of Brazil. The fugitives are members of the Red Command, according to investigators.
