The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office launched a fact sheet to investigate allegations of irregular sheltering and adoption of Yanomami children.
The procedure was opened after a complaint made by the Indigenous Council of Roraima (CIR), in the midst of the humanitarian crisis that affects the Yanomami territory.
The CIR claimed on January 30 that it had received reports that children arriving in Boa Vista in commuting flows were being sent for adoption, with parents being stripped of family power.
The Public Prosecutor Alisson Marugal requested information from the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare of Roraima and the Municipal Secretariat of Social Management of Boa Vista on the number of Yanomami children who are sheltered in shelters.
The 1st and 2nd Childhood and Youth Courts of the Court of Justice of Roraima were also ordered to provide information on children submitted to the adoption process in the last five years and the number of Yanomami children who are currently in the process of adoption.
The letter was delivered on February 10th and public bodies have until March 2nd to respond to questions.
In the document, the MPF emphasizes that the case is not closely related to the powers of the Attorney General’s Office, but that it is necessary to clarify the situation of adoptions to protect indigenous peoples and communities.
