During a special operation launched between the 17th and 20th at Guarulhos International Airport, a task force from the Federal Revenue Service in São Paulo and the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) seized medical equipment valued at US$ 166 thousand.
Among the confiscated assets are surgical lighting devices, irrigation systems, sets of cortical screws and others intended for medical practice.
Revenue and Anvisa agents also targeted clandestinely imported medical supplies. According to the IRS, the action was coordinated 'in response to the holding of an important health event in São Paulo, aiming to intensify surveillance and control of medical products entering the country'.
The IRS highlighted that the need for the offensive was due to the convergence of several international participants in the event, 'which increased the risk of introducing unregulated and potentially unsafe equipment into the Brazilian market'.
Also according to the Revenue, the initiative aims to ensure that all medical products used during and after the meeting 'meet the strict safety and effectiveness standards established by Anvisa'.
During the operation, 70 medical items were retained, with a total value of approximately US$166,000.
The passengers involved are under investigation and subject to legal proceedings for 'attempting to circumvent customs and health controls'.
