Federal universities report impacts of blocking MEC funds

Last Monday (28), with just over a month to go before the end of the year, the federal government blocked funds from the 2022 General Budget for the Ministry of Education (MEC).

Blockages can reach R$ 1.7 billion and affect mainly federal universities with regard to maintenance, payment of professors and professionals, among other items.

In a note, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) regretted the cut of BRL 7.9 million in its cash and hopes that the measure will be reversed.

The Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) says that the federal government is not committed to “Education and the University, as well as Science, culture and the arts”. The Bahian university suffered a blockade of R$ 13.7 million in resources.

The Federal University of Goiás (UFG) said it was surprised by the cut suffered. In a note, the institution says that it is being affected “with the reduction of R$ 2.4 million in the resources destined to discretionary expenses, destined to the cost of various services”.

The Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) declared that there was no cut at the moment, but contingency. This way, there will be no impact on your priority expenses.

The Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) stated that the new block withdraws R$ 5.2 million that remained to end the 2022 academic year, which makes its situation unsustainable, “the most serious experienced in the history of the university”, said in note.

Other institutions, such as the Federal University of Recôncavo Baiano (UFRB), Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), Federal University of Roraima (UFRR) regretted the blockade and claimed that they will experience difficulties with the budget cut.

In a note, the Ministry of Education said it had received notification from the Ministry of Economy about the budget blockages and highlights that “the MEC maintains open communication with everyone and maintains negotiations with the Ministry of Economy and the Civil House to evaluate alternatives and seek solutions to face the situation.”
