The North American delivery company FedEx will start a pilot project in Recife and Brasília to use electric motorcycles in logistics operations in Brazil.
The project has three electric motorcycles that will be evaluated over six months. The bikes are from national startups Voltz and Origin, FedEx said.
Two motorcycles to be tested in Brasília (DF) will be recharged through the battery exchange system, in which the motorcyclist can quickly replace a discharged battery with a charged one at stations throughout the city. The Recife motorcycle will be recharged inside FedEx stations in the city.
The logistics company did not provide further details on the investment for the project. The company is committing more than $2 billion globally to meet sustainable energy, carbon sequestration and vehicle electrification goals.
Eduardo Araújo, logistics director for FedEx in Brazil, said the pilot project will analyze the range of motorcycles, taking into account the route and rider profiles, the weight of the load and the distance to be covered in a period of six months. .
“Based on a positive result, we plan to study the inclusion of electric motorcycles in our fleet in the near future”, says Araújo.
In Brazil, the FedEx fleet comprises approximately 2,900 delivery vehicles serving 5,300 cities. In 2013, the company acquired six electric cars and there are currently plans to expand that number starting in the second half of this year.
FedEx Express has a global target for 50% of pickup and delivery vehicle purchases by 2025 to be electric models, increasing to 100% of all purchases by 2030.
