Felt of Pepe Mujica is ended with tribute in Uruguay

The wake of Pepe Mujica, former president of Uruguay and icon of Latin America politics, was closed around 5 pm on Thursday (15). The ceremony brought together thousands of people, including presidents Lula and Gabriel Boric, from Chile.

At the end of the event, Maurício Rosencof made a statement. He was a friend of Mujica and was arrested and tortured with the former president. In addition, he was leader of the guerrilla movement of which both were part.

After that, the coffin was positioned on the terrace of the Uruguayan legislature, in front of the building where the wake took place, where hundreds of people gathered to pay the last honors to Pepe Mujica.

After a few minutes, the flags on the coffin were taken and handed over to Lucía Topolansky, a widow of Mujica. Then he was taken by a funeral car.

Following the desire for Mujica, he will be cremated and the ashes will return to the farm in which he lived in Rincón Del Cerro, around Montevideo, to be buried under the tree where his dog Manuela is also buried.

According to the Uruguayan authorities, more than 40,000 people attended the procession and the first day of the wake. In addition, the human cord that accompanied the funeral procession was composed of 300 people.

The procession began at the headquarters of the Uruguayan Presidency, where the current president, Luis Lacalle Pou, placed the national flag over the casket of Mujica.

Then she went through several places that marked the life of the former president, such as the headquarters of the guerrilla organization of which he was part of the youth and the headquarters of the Movement of Popular Participation, a political party founded by Mujica after the country’s redemocratization.

On this second day, the event also brought together world leaders, such as Presidents Lula and Gabriel Boric, from Chile.
