Female name to be acquired in Belgium’s largest tunnel – Who is the chosen personality

From now on, the largest tunnel in Belgium will have a female name, located in Brussels. As announced today Monday (8/3) the Brussels region, according to the APE-MPE, after an online vote, the tunnel will be named after Belgian singer Annie Cordy, who passed away last September at the age of 92.

The singer of “Tata Yoyo” and “La bonne du curé” won 14 other female personalities in the competition such as the Brussels-born resistance fighter Andre De Jong, the Margarit Jursenar novelist, the Belgian judge and feminist Marie Popell , Rosa Parks or Simon Veil.

“Annie Cordy clearly stood out among the 15 candidates with more than 22% of the vote,” Bruxelles Mobilité said in a statement after the vote.

Among the streets of the Belgian capital bearing the name of a person, only 6.1% bear a woman’s name and 93.1% that of a man, reminds the public service of Brussels.

This tunnel, known for its traffic jams, was previously called the “Leopold II Tunnel”, in honor of the former king, a controversial figure in Belgium’s colonial past.
