Femicide: 50 women killed in Italy in less than 6 months

Statistics show that it is a declining number, albeit slight compared to the same period last year, but it is a number that appears to be very high. Six months have not yet passed since the beginning of 2022 and already 50 women have been victims of femicide. Almost one woman killed every four days. More than half are victims of their partner or ex. the data are from the Criminal Analysis Service of the Central Police Department which recorded 11 femicides only in the two weeks ranging from 5 to 20 June.

The last to lose her life was Caterina D’Andrea, 72, shot dead by her 76-year-old husband Pietro Bergantini in Rome. Two weeks ago the double murder in the Vicenza area: a man killed his last partner and ex-wife. The dynamics always seem the same and the victims find death by voluntary homicide in the home and family.

In the same period last year the victims had been 51. In all 2021 103 women were killed, 101 in 2020, 92 in 2019.

“To date we record that the total number of homicides in Italian society is constantly decreasing”, he explained to theHANDLE Stefano Delfini, director of the Criminal Analysis Service of the Central Police Department. Murders are falling, but the data on femicide remains stable: «The number of murders of women is not decreasing».

Of the 50 victims in 2022, 30 found death at the hands of their partner or ex. There is no mention of femicide in the text, there is no crime as such, but there is the distinction of women as victims. Delfini explained: “For us it is important to reconstruct the contexts and areas in which these crimes are committed, deepening above all the victim / perpetrator relationship. Our criminal code, in fact, is based on the perpetrator of the crime, while to guide the work of the police it is essential to have information on the victim as well: to avoid secondary victimization and to have more elements on the relationship with those who commit the crime. femicide “.
