No one has the presumption of entering a criminal mind and retracing its thoughts, but the writer and criminologist Cristina Brondoni, thanks to his experience as a consultant for defensive investigations, tries to explain the behavior of Alessandro Impagnatiello, the 30-year-old barman, who killed his 29-year-old partner Giulia Tramontano, seven months pregnant. He staged the girl’s disappearance from Senago, after trying twice to set her on fire, then keeping her in the trunk of the car for three days and finally hiding her in a cavity a few kilometers away from home.
The expert is familiar with feminicides (she is currently dealing with a case, with final conviction) because they are part of the evolution of homicide in Italy.
How does feminicide fit into this historical period?
«The peak of homicides in Italy was reached in the 1990s, very often due to organized crime: around 2,000 a year, including 500 women. Today they are 300 but a third are classified as feminicides. It is no longer a question of women conniving with mafia circles, but kills from a person with whom they have had or still have a relationship”.

What did you think about the news of Giulia’s disappearance?
«I didn’t believe it, I immediately thought of the murder. It’s hard to disappear without a trace, especially with a close-knit family like hers, from which she would not have strayed and from which she would have asked for help. A pregnant woman’s first thought is the safety of her baby, so she doesn’t go off putting it in danger by doing things out of her ordinary behavior. Losing traces of oneself is an extreme gesture, but today it is complicated to vanish into thin air ».
The first few days passed with the killer’s misleading statements. Does this happen often?
«Yes, in homicide the misdirection of investigations is the norm. But it is precisely in the following moments that a person’s personality emerges. If you are a narcissist used to lying, you do not take responsibility for the gesture and do everything, even if in a clumsy way, to remove suspicion from you.
The police could have searched the car, the garage or the house and found the signs of concealment. Why did they wait?
“Locking a suspect in a corner is never a good idea, even at the risk of losing evidence. Perhaps the police knew what had happened but wanted to find the body, bring it full circle for the family. And this strategy turned out to be correct because the killer then confessed.”
Why was premeditation excluded?
«Because he didn’t organize himself earlier, for example by buying a gun. He stabbed Giulia in the middle of an argument. She wanted to eliminate the problem and she did it in an easy, banal and tragic way. And at that point he asked himself: “What do I do now?”. He hasn’t been able to sustain an argument or take any responsibility, so he tries to disguise the crime scene and set it on fire, but he’s unable to, so he puts the body in the trunk. He tried to get the problem to be dispersed without success and the two stab wounds in the throat are the way to definitively shut a person’s mouth, to stop arguing. Alessandro said that her partner didn’t even scream and describes the scene with the same simplicity with which she says she ate a piadina ».
And continued to live normally?
“It happens to people who don’t feel remorse or guilt. The so-called “raptus” does not exist: instead there are toxic relationships and assholes, pass me the language. Enough of the politically correct: we talk as we live. Calling the murderer a “monster” degenerates the risk of mythologizing him as an evil mind, which he obviously isn’t. The tragedy is that often we don’t realize that we have a person next to us who seems normal on paper».
What should you pay attention to?
“There are often warning signs, like comments from friends who aren’t convinced he’s the right person for you. In the case of Giulia and Alessandro’s relationship, other people are also involved: the lover, the ex, his son with the ex, the lover’s son (who later miscarried) and the son who was about to be born (Thiago )”.
What do you think of the infamous “last date”?
“The very definition contains in itself something definitive. But if a person doesn’t want responsibilities, ultimatums and constraints, they use that moment to play for everything. That’s why it should be avoided. Some killers use excuses to lure their victim, like the dog being sick, for example. In that case you really have to ascertain the intentions and the circumstances.

There have been many gestures in these hours, which ones do you consider useful?
“I found the bodyguard’s offer to take a woman to her last appointment very kind but it could prove counterproductive, dragging someone else into the matter. Nicola Urru’s sand statue is also a very useful symbolic gesture. What doesn’t help are the tasteless comments. Some of us could for once leave personal interest aside.’
One of two influencers accused of looting
In what sense?
«Take the selfie with Maria De Filippi in Maurizio Costanzo’s funeral home, the culmination of a life on TV, but it could have been avoided. The influencer who uses the death of a person lacks good taste: his category wants to be judged only in a positive way and does not accept criticism ».
One of them asked Vanity Fair to delete the mention of his Tweet which had been defined elsewhere as profiteering. What do you think?
«If you do something questionable, you cannot ask the press to keep it silent: the internet does not forget. The online strategy is to add content, not remove it».
The second influencer accused of “social profiteering” by users
Returning to the killer, why didn’t he try to save Thiago after the stab wounds?
«I don’t think he thought about the child at that moment, otherwise he would have called the ambulance and stopped the crime (having extenuating circumstances). Instead he thought only of himself and how to get rid of the body. Those who live in parallel relationships know how to lie, but he is not capable of withstanding the pressure and from the outside it seems that he doesn’t give a damn. To the point that when he went to turn himself in he rushed the police to release the confession. That’s why the investigators consider him a manipulative narcissist in their profile. One of those who he believes to be smarter than the others and to get away with it, who even goes so far as to challenge the police by postponing the moment of the decision on the body. Alessandro wanted things easy, certainly not managing the disposal of a corpse, an antisocial in short (as can be understood from the thefts in the cash register in the place where he works): he lies, steals and kills ».
Why did he go to his lover and ex? Did he want to attack them too?
«He just wanted an alibi but luckily neither of them let him into the house, still preventing him from hurting them. Not that Giulia allowed it, but the difference lies in having had a different perception of the risk».
What do you think has most affected public opinion?
«The protagonists of this story are young, handsome, with a good job and were about to start a family with a child. Unfortunately, however, this type of feminicide falls within the casuistry. Alessandro was not capable of being a father, a boyfriend, a friend or even a murderer».
Alexander is not an exception?
«In cases of femicides it is almost the norm: it is textbook, in the tragedy we see all the banality of evil. He is one of those men with no morals and no respect for anyone. They may be professionally capable, they may appear normal, but then there is the moment that triggers the murder.”
Are there any precautions to prevent similar acts from happening again?
“At least three. First of all, don’t think that if a friend considers your partner a bad person, she does it out of envy. And if this person disrespects you (with a betrayal, for example) something is wrong. Finally knowing that yes, relationships can be broken, but never with the last date. Love should be simple, you shouldn’t spend your days fixing it or making things work. For some couples, leave-and-take arguments work, but for most it would be better to understand that in a relationship there must be room for both ».
