Fernanda Montenegro celebrates 80 years of career; remember memorable moments

Fernanda Montenegro completes 80 years of career in 2024. With dozens of plays, films and soap operas under her belt, the actress was the only Brazilian to be nominated for an Oscar in the “Best Actress” category and also has nominations at the Golden Globes and the Emmys.

Still with her active career, the Rio native will present “A Cerimônia do Adeus”, a reading of the feminist work by Simone de Beauvoir at Sesc 14 Bis, in São Paulo, from June 20th.

Arlette Pinheiro Monteiro Torres — registered name of Fernanda Montenegro — was born in October 1929 and was the first actress hired by TV Tupi, in 1951, when she assumed her stage name. Throughout her career, in addition to her first broadcaster, she worked at Band, TV Cultura, RecordTV, TV Globo, TV Excelsior and TV Rio.

The Rio native was one of the founders of Teatro dos Sete, in 1959, together with her husband, Ítalo Rossi — with whom she remained married until his death in 2008. The couple had two children within their 55-year relationship: Fernanda Torres, 58 , also an actress, and Cláudio Torres, 61, director.

“Imortal” at the Brazilian Academy of Letters

Internationally recognized, Montenegro was nominated for an Oscar in 1999 in the “Best Actress” category for the role of Isadora Teixeira in “Central do Brasil”. She was the first Latin American woman to hold this title. Furthermore, she won the 2013 International Emmy in the same category for playing Dona Picucha in “Doce Mãe”.

In addition to these, his CV has nominations for other awards such as the Berlin Festival, Golden Globe, Brazilian Cinema Grand Prix, Satellite Awards, Molière Award, among others.

In 2022, Fernanda Torres took office as “Immortal” at the Brazilian Academy of Letters. The actress now occupies Chair 17, the first woman in the position.

In her speech at the acceptance ceremony, she said: “I must clarify that I am a tireless self-taught person, whose intellectual and emotional origins have always reached me and still lead me through the unremitting experience of a profession: actress. I’m an actress.”

And he continued: “I come from that mythical, mystical archaic, eternal art, which is Theatre. I am the first representative of the Brazilian scene, of the Brazilian stage, to be received in this House as an Academic”.

“War of the Sexes” (1983)

Produced by TV Globo, the soap opera was on air for seven months and has as its backdrop the dispute between men and women. The story follows a bet made between cousins ​​— the protagonists Charlotte (Fernanda Montenegro) and Otávio (Paulo Autran) — to compete for their uncle’s inheritance.

To compete for the heritage, each person forms a group — which includes artists such as Tarcísio Meira, Glória Menezes, Maria Zilda Bethlem and Maitê Proença.

The production drew attention at the time of its release for featuring scenes that had humor as their sole objective. Silvio de Abreu, the author, said at the time that he was inspired by national films that had the same tone as the soap opera and by American cinema from the 1930s.

“Central do Brasil” (1998)

In the film, Fernanda Montenegro plays Dora, a retired teacher who works as a letter writer for illiterate people at Central do Brasil, a train station in Rio de Janeiro. The adventure happens when she tries to help a boy find his father in the interior of the Northeast until he loses his mother in a car accident.

The performance earned an Oscar nomination for “Best Actress” in 1999. The winner was Gwyneth Paltrow with her performance in “Shakespeare in Love”.

“O Auto da Compadecida” (2000)

The dramatic comedy is based on the 1955 play of the same name, written by Ariano Suassuna. The story follows Chicó and João Grilo, two poor men who live off scams to survive.

In the plot, Fernanda Montenegro is Our Lady, a saint who appears to save the Northeasterners and her group from eternal damnation.
