Fernanda Montenegro says she was already expecting a prize from her daughter: “She inherited it from me”

The actress Fernanda Montenegro 95, paid tribute to his daughter, Fernanda Torres 59, who won the award for Best Actress in a Drama Film, node Golden Globe last Sunday (5).

Montenegro said he already knew that his daughter would win the prize, and said: fernanda montenegro. “I knew my daughter would win this award. It is a convergence towards a vocation that she certainly inherited from me”, said the actress.

“It’s an extraordinary film, an extraordinary cast, and my daughter starring in this proposal of humanism that is the film. Walter Salles knows how to conduct whatever he wants in an impressive way […] It has given fundamental opportunities to Nanda and me”, stated Montenegro.

She also read a letter she wrote to her daughter, in which she recalled Fernanda Torres’ work and productions in which they acted together. “It is a difficult feat to achieve. I know it firsthand,” she said in one of the excerpts.

Fernanda Montenegro’s interview was given to Globo News, this Monday (6).

Torres won the award for his performance in the film “I’m Still Here” directed by Walter Salles and inspired by the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, in which he tells the real story of his family.

The film follows the trajectory of Marcelo’s mother, Eunice Paiva (Fernanda Torres), who needs to reorganize her life and the lives of her children after her husband, Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello), is taken by the military during the military dictatorship in Brazil and disappears without leaving a trace.

Fernanda Torres showed her power as an actress and is receiving international recognition from the industry for her portrayal of Eunice Paiva, but she was not Walter Salles’ first choice for the role.

Fernanda Montenegro already competed for the Golden Globe in 1999 for her performance in the film “Central do Brasil”, but lost the statuette to Cate Blanchett, who was the protagonist of the feature film “Elizabeth”. However, Walter Salles’ film won Best Foreign Film.

At the time, Salles, Fernandona and Vinicius Oliveira took the stage to receive the honor. For this reason, Torres made a point of highlighting that her mother had stood on the same stage 25 years earlier. In an impromptu speech, the veteran said at the time:

“My English is not good, but my soul is better. You chose. On behalf of our producer Arthur Cohn, a true lion, Walter Salles, a wonderful director, Michael Barker, Tom Bernard and Marcy Bloom of Sony Classics, thank you very much for your support of ‘Central do Brasil’. I am very, very happy that our film was so well received and touched your hearts. Thank you very much,” he said.

Shortly afterwards, Fernanda’s name appeared nominated as Best Actress — an unprecedented feat for Brazil — at the 1999 Oscars. “Central do Brasil” was also nominated for Best Foreign Film, but neither of them won the award.
