Fernanda Montenegro’s daughter’s chances of standing out at the Oscars increased significantly after her victory at the Hollywood Foreign Press Awards, last Sunday (5).
Now, prestigious vehicles such as Variety, one of Hollywood’s main entertainment publications, and Gold Derby, a website specializing in the race for awards, point to Torres as a strong candidate to be among the five nominees in the Best Actress category.
According to the Varietythe Golden Globe win “gives Torres a vital boost in a category where it is notoriously difficult for international actors to get attention at the Oscars.” However, Clayton Davis, the publication’s journalist, points out that the overall race for the best actress award at the Oscars remains tight.
On the Goldderby website, where readers, editors and awards experts place their bets on possible winners and nominees, Torres occupies fifth place.
According to the portal, “the Brazilian star has been one of the critics’ favorites and has an engaged fan base online, which intensely supports her work in Walter Salles’ film. Still, Torres seemed an unlikely choice to make the list of Best Actress Oscar nominees, especially after her absence from the BAFTA shortlists.”
“However, after her victory on Sunday night, she may have become a more solid bet than Jolie or veteran Oscar winner Nicole Kidman.”
