Fernanda Torres wins international award and thanks from a distance; see speech

Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres 59, was honored by Critics Choice Awards in a ceremony held on Tuesday night (22) at the Egyptian Theater, in Los Angeles, in the United States. She, however, was unable to attend the event, but participated via video to thank her for the award.

“First of all, I would really like to be with you guys tonight, but unfortunately life isn’t fair. I’m releasing ‘I’m Still Here’ in Brazil, so from here, in my hometown, I’d like to deeply thank the Critics Choice association for this award”, he began.

‘For me, this is a confirmation that I am part of the culture that shaped me from Gabriel García Márquez to Jorge Luis Borges, Iñárritu, Ricardo Darín, Carmen Miranda and Frida Kahlo. We Brazilians, sometimes, don’t feel like we belong, because we don’t speak Spanish. We speak Portuguese, but this is a confirmation.”

Torres said it was inevitable to become an actress and writer, as she comes from an artistic family, remembering her childhood in the wings of the theater watching her parents, Fernanda Montenegro and Fernando Torres, on stage. From this, she made a connection between her story and what is portrayed in the film. “I’m Still Here” .

“I remember during the dictatorship the fear they had of censorship, because the place could be closed the day before it opened. They had bomb threats and shootings at the theater. It was strange, horrible,” he said.

“But they were never tortured or murdered like the patriarch of the Paiva family. The difficulties of Eunice Paiva, this wonderful woman that I had the honor of playing, were the same as those of my parents, of an entire generation for the return of democracy in Brazil”, he continued.

“I’m Still Here is not a film about the past. It’s strangely and sadly about the present. A reflection on the normalization of State violence. Eunice Paiva’s dignity, strength and perseverance led us to the film and I feel that I am now a different actress after the film”, she stated.
