The government of Pernambuco reported this week that more than half of the works on the central strip of Fernando de Noronha airport have been completed. The advance seeks to reinforce the government’s request to the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) for the return of jet planes to the archipelago.
The expectation is that the central strip, the first stage of the work and crucial for regularization with Anac, will be completed by the end of 2024, although the official forecast is for the beginning of 2025, without a defined date.
The investment in the work, which began on September 24, 2024, is R$60 million and includes the renovation of the runway, as well as improvements to taxiing and the aircraft apron. Currently, the airport operates with domestic flights and medium-sized aircraft, after the ban, since October 2022, on the landing of large planes due to cracks and holes in the runway.
According to the Secretariat of Mobility and Infrastructure, the work is divided into three stages: the central lane (already in progress), the edges of the landing and take-off runway, and the taxiways and aircraft apron. Full completion of the work is scheduled for the end of March 2025.
“The services are in full operation and are being carried out from 5pm to 9am so as not to interfere with aviation operations at the terminal. Anac technicians and airline representatives were on the island and closely monitored the development of works at the terminal, which currently operates domestic flights and has the capacity to receive medium-sized aircraft”, explained the ministry, in a note to CNN .
Ticket sales
In October, Latam reported that it suspended the sale of airline tickets to Fernando de Noronha due to the lack of completion of paving works on the runway at Governador Carlos Wilson Airport.
The company had announced in September that it would make daily flights to Noronha from São Paulo, but was still waiting for the renovation to be completed before starting operations.
At the time, in a note, Latam detailed the reason for the interruption in ticket sales. “Latam regrets to inform that it has suspended the sale of airline tickets for the Guarulhos-Fernando de Noronha flight indefinitely. The company had started sales for the flight route from November 15th, after official information from the local government and the airport concessionaire about the end date of the renovation work on the runway at Fernando de Noronha airport. The company reinforces that it had already obtained all the necessary documentation to start the operation”, explains the note.
According to the company, the company’s Airbus A319 aircraft cannot operate in Fernando de Noronha until the runway paving works are completed.
“Due to the uncertainty of the delivery of the work at the archipelago airport, conducted by the concessionaire DIX and the Secretariat of Mobility and Infrastructure (Semobi) of the Government of the State of Pernambuco, Latam took the decision to suspend sales until a new forecast of conclusion. LATAM’s operation in Fernando de Noronha with Airbus A319 aircraft depends on this factor to ensure regular flight operations”, he explains.
