Ferrari launches hybrid convertible model 296 GTS

Ferrari on Tuesday unveiled the new 296 GTS convertible, its fourth plug-in hybrid model, with the luxury sports car maker advancing its electrification strategy.

The convertible follows the three hybrid models that went into production – the SF 90 Stradale in 2019, its convertible version, called the SF90 Spider, in 2020, and last year’s 296 GTB.

The 296 GTS is a convertible version, equipped with a retractable hardtop, of the existing 296 GTB, a luxury car that costs around €300,000.

The two cars share the most salient features, including a rear turbocharged 6-cylinder (V6) engine coupled to a 122-kilowatt electric motor for 830 horsepower and 25 kilometers of silent electric power. Its top speed exceeds 330 kilometers per hour, Ferrari said.

Deliveries of the new model will begin in Europe in early 2023 and pricing will be confirmed in due course.

Until now, Ferrari’s road cars were typically powered by more powerful V8 or V12 engines, but the company is increasingly reducing the share of cars equipped with highly polluting V12s.

Another new model is scheduled for release in the coming months, the long-awaited Purosangue. It will be Ferrari’s first SUV and will bring the company into a lucrative segment where direct rivals like Volkswagen’s Lamborghini are already present.

A veteran of the tech industry, Chief Executive Benedetto Vigna took the helm at Ferrari last September with the task of bringing a brand synonymous with noisy engines into the new era of quieter, cleaner electric mobility.

As part of that, Ferrari has already promised its first all-electric model in 2025, while Vigna has already said the company will seek technology partnerships.

More details on Ferrari’s electrification strategy are expected on June 16, when Vigna will present its first comprehensive business plan.
