Fertilization for singles, motherhood, gender gap: “Italy is not a country for women”, Emma Marrone tells Vanity Fair

In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair and on the occasion of the release of the docufilm Wrong Leo Ascendant, Emma Marrone talks about herself in a dialogue with Claudia Parzanipresident of Borsa Italiana and writer, in a special issue dedicated to the condition of women in Italy and to the economic independence of women in our country.

«We are not free to manage our bodies», says Emma, «and this is violence. We live in a country where a woman to have a child alone has to go abroad because assisted fertilization is not provided for. You cannot go to your gynecologist to ask for donor sperm because you want a child. Not even when you’re forty and you know perfectly well that you won’t find the love of your life anytime soon. How many women lose their fertility at the age of 40 due to leukemia and there is no doctor to explain egg conservation to them? And what do they answer you? If God doesn’t want it, then it’s no good. But why do I have to go to Spain to do this thing and I can’t do it in my country? I kept the ovarian tissue. I get excited about these topics because I know many women who have had to move abroad to conceive a child on their own. Why do we have to be forced to have a child only with a man here? In Italy, then, a man studies and can reach a position of power, a woman works twice as hard and is questioned at her first motherhood. This, I repeat, is violence.

«In recent months we have heard politics take a step back from the woman rights and minorities, rights often acquired after years of struggles and battles”, explains director Simone Marchetti in his editorial. “But rights are never secondary to inflation and the relative poverty of families and therefore of women. Going back on the possibility of abortion, for example, doesn’t just mean sinking into the past, it also means blocking the economy of a country because the dreams of so many individual women are being blocked. Also for this reason, in the new issue of Vanity Fair let’s talk about women’s economic independence and money: women need it because their dreams, desires and rights are goals that must be financed. Women’s money is not just wealth: it is earning, saving, investing and therefore independence”.

This week there are many stories of women told in the issue on newsstands, on the website vanityfair.it and on the magazine’s social channels: this is a training and awareness-raising course in view of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women scheduled for 25 November 2022.
