After participating in a closed meeting with the president of Petrobras, Joaquim Silva e Luna, at the headquarters of the state-owned company, in Rio de Janeiro, this Friday (4), senator Simone Tebet (MDB-MS) and pre-candidate for the Planalto told the CNN that the production of fertilizers in Brazil is an emergency issue to be resolved in the country.
The focus of the meeting was to address the impacts of the war between Russia and Ukraine on the Brazilian economy.
The leader of the women’s bench in the Senate draws attention to the consequences of this scenario in the short term. “Without fertilizers, production drops, food is placed on the table of the Brazilian people much more expensive. Fertilizers are an emergency issue in Brazil,” she says.
According to Tebet, the unfolding of the conflict in Eastern Europe reinforces this bottleneck of agribusiness in the country. “THE [presença] of Russia in the war, an already world war, is making us not have security for the next harvest, that we will have hydrogenated fertilizers”, he highlights.
“Brazil is dependent on the purchase of fertilizers that go to agribusiness, which causes production to be in abundance and, with that, causes prices to fall”, he adds.
The Minister of Agriculture, Tereza Cristina, and entities in the agrarian sector, such as the National Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock in Brazil (CNA), have already warned this week about the risks of fertilizer shortages for the harvest started in September this year.
During this period, Brazil mainly plants corn and soybeans. The two products are the flagships of Brazilian exports.

The parliamentarian also said that she had discussed with Petrobras representatives about the impact of conflicts between Russia and Ukraine on fuel prices.
Tebet stated that some projects are being analyzed and suggested in order to mitigate the implications of the international market in the cost of diesel and gasoline.
“What is being proposed is to make a stabilization mattress, a way to save when it is low and to inject money to subsidize when it is high, making savings”, he explains.
For the senator, the geopolitical situation also affects the price of gasoline, but the most delicate situation is that of diesel.
“Especially with diesel, because diesel is a ripple effect, it has an incalculable impact on people’s lives. We can no longer live with diesel at almost R$7”, points out the senator.
