Festa do Morro: archdiocese confirms event at site where church collapsed in Recife

The traditional Feast of Our Lady of the Conception, celebrated in Morro da Conceição, in the northern part of Recife, also known as “Festa do Morro”, has been confirmed. According to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Conception, of the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife, the 2024 event will take place from November 28 to December 8, in celebration of the 120th anniversary of the festivity.

The confirmation comes four days after the tragedy that left two dead and 28 injured in the parish of Morro da Conceição.

Traditionally, the celebrations take place between November and December; the event attracts around 1.7 million faithful from all over the country every year.

According to the archdiocese, the images of Saint Joseph and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which adorned the altar of the Sanctuary, are intact after the collapse of the church’s roof.

On-site activities

In order to maintain the activities of the Morro da Conceição sanctuary, Recife City Hall began, on Saturday (31), the assembly of a temporary structure in the block in front of the sacred space. The structure allows for masses and celebrations to be held and has a stage, lighting and sound.

Investigations

The Civil Police of Pernambuco began the first hearings of the investigation into the partial collapse of the roof of the Santuário da Conceição, in the North Zone of Recife. The case, which left two people dead and another 28 injured, occurred on Friday (30). The deadline for finalizing the report is 30 days, and may be extended for the same period.
