What is the festival like?

The Parintins Festival is one of the biggest folklore events in the country. The festival takes place annually in June on the island of Parintins, in Amazonas, which can only be accessed by river (boat). The city is 369 km from Manaus and the journey from the port across the Amazon River takes 18 hours, according to information released by the Government of Amazonas.

The folklore event had its first edition in 1965, according to the state government. It was created by a group of friends from Juventude Alegre Católica to raise funds for the construction of the Nossa Senhora do Carmo Cathedral, today one of the best-known spots in Parintins. The party was created to tell the story of the boi-bumbá.

The party shows the battle between the oxen Caprichoso and Garantido. The dispute between the bois-bumbás talks about a couple of farm workers, known as Mãe Catirina and Pai Francisco. Catirina, who is pregnant, wants to eat the tongue of the most beautiful ox in the place — so Francisco sacrifices the boss's most beautiful ox to fulfill his pregnant wife's wish. The boss sends his employees to look for the animal and, when it is found dead, they call a shaman. The indigenous healer then performs a miracle resulting in the ox's resurrection. Happy with the animal's return, the boss forgives the couple and holds a party to celebrate.
