Fewer and fewer traces of Windows 10: Microsoft hid Disk Cleanup in Windows 11

One of Microsoft’s key aspirations in Windows 11 is to bring together as much of the system’s built-in capabilities as possible in one place — more specifically, the Settings app. A new step towards this goal is the abandonment of the usual disk cleaning utility, which in Windows 10 was called through the context menu of the disk properties. Now, in a fresh build of Windows 11, the corresponding section of system settings opens instead. However, the old utility was not removed from the system. This was reported by the gHacks portal.

Microsoft’s new decision has been criticized because the alternative to the familiar system cleaning tool is not so convenient – more steps need to be done to get what you want. At the same time, the “standard” utility immediately shows in a grouped form all categories of files and other things that can clog the disk.

This is the very same disk cleaning utility that Microsoft replaced with the settings section in Windows 11.

At the moment, in a fresh build of Windows 11, there are 2 ways to call the familiar utility for cleaning disks: either find it through the search function, or enter the command in the Run menu cleanmgr.exe… Most likely, Microsoft will not permanently remove this utility from Windows 11, and power users will be able to continue using it if necessary instead of an alternative in the system settings.
