Fiancé admitted to killing American influencer Gabby Petito, says FBI

Before taking his own life, Brian Laundrie wrote in a notebook that he was responsible for the death of fiancé Gabby Petito, according to the FBI. The couple was traveling in a van across the United States, when they disappeared and local authorities discovered the crime after months of investigation.

“A review of the notebook revealed written statements by Mr. Laundrie claiming responsibility for Ms. Petito’s death,” the FBI’s Denver field office said in a statement released Friday.

The notebook was discovered in October in the same area where Brian Laundrie’s remains were found in Florida’s Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, officials said. A revolver was found nearby, the FBI said.

Petito and Laundrie’s families have reached an agreement on how the couple’s belongings, including a laptop, will be distributed, Laundrie family attorney Steve Bertolino said on Friday, about four months after Gabby Petito’s body was found. been found in Wyoming.

Laundrie had been the target of a week-long hunt when her body was found. His family was told he shot himself in the head and his death was ruled a suicide, Bertolino said in November.

The lawyer did not say which family will receive the notebook. The Petito family met with the FBI in Tampa, Florida, this week and reached an agreement on the distribution of her and Laundrie’s belongings.

The Petitos thanked the FBI for their support, according to a statement from the family’s attorney.

“We truly appreciate the diligent and painstaking efforts of the FBI in this extremely complicated case. The quality and quantity of facts and information collected by the FBI leaves no doubt (that) Brian Laundrie murdered Gabby,” he said.

The FBI said on Friday that the investigation into the death “will be closed in the near future.”

“All the logical investigative steps have been completed in this case,” said Denver FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael Schneider. “The investigation has not identified any individuals other than Brian Laundrie as directly involved in the tragic death of Gabby Petito.”

The response to the crime comes a week after an independent investigator ruled that two police officers — who stopped Petito’s van in Moab, Utah, on Aug. of traffic.

The officers agreed not to charge Gabby Petito as long as she and Laundrie spent the night apart. The independent investigator found that the officers neglected their duty by not pressing charges.

Laundrie, 23, and Petito, 22, who were engaged, took a trip in Petito’s converted Ford Transit van in June and documented their travels on social media. Laundrie returned alone, driving the van to his parents’ home in Florida on September 1.

While police were looking for Petito in mid-September, Laundrie disappeared. Petito’s remains were found a few days later in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming. The cause of his death was determined to be manslaughter by manual strangulation.

The specific night leading up to Petito’s death remains a mystery. The FBI described Laundrie as a “person of interest” in his murder, but he has not been charged with the murder, although he has faced charges for allegedly using Petito’s debit card without authorization.

His remains were found on October 20 in an area that was submerged in a reserve in North Port.

Laundrie’s father, who was looking for him with authorities when his son’s remains were found, discovered the notebook near Laundrie’s body. Experts said at the time that the notebook could be instrumental in providing answers. The notebook was wet and officials did not immediately say if they had any information from it.

The lawyer told the CNN: “Gabby and Brian are no longer with their families and this tragedy has caused tremendous emotional pain and suffering to everyone who loved one or both of them. We can only hope that with the case closed, each family can begin to heal, move on, and find peace in their children’s memories. May Gabby and Brian rest in peace.”
