Fibromyalgia: Understand disease that affects Lady Gaga and how it is treated

The singer Lady Gaga 39, landed at dawn on Tuesday (29) in Rio de Janeiro to make the biggest show of his career on Saturday (3). The artist will perform at Copacabana Beach, in the south of the state capital, in a free show.

The coming of Gaga to Brazil happens about eight years after canceling its presentation at Rock in Rio, in 2017, for health reasons. At the time, the artist used her X profile to cancel her presence at the festival, claiming that she was suffering from symptoms of fibromyalgia, clinical syndrome characterized by pain throughout the body.

Fibromyalgia has no exact cause defined by science, but recent studies point to the possibility of being related to changes in the brain and spinal cord that may increase the levels of chemicals in the brain that signal pain.

According to Mayo Clinic, a non -profit organization in the area of medical services in the United States, some factors may lead to these changes in the brain, such as genetics (heredity), infections or physical and emotional events, such as prolonged stress or physical or psychological trauma.

Fibromyalgia symptoms include:

  • Fatigue;
  • Non -repairing sleep, even after sleeping for long periods;
  • Sleep disorders (such as restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea);
  • Cognitive difficulties (such as difficulty focusing, paying attention and memory).

The diagnosis of fibromyalgia is clinical, ie it is not done by examinations. The doctor conducts an interview with the patient, analyzes the symptoms and rules out other problems that may manifest in a similar way. In addition, specific diagnostic criteria are used for the syndrome, such as:

  • Pain for more than three months throughout the body;
  • Presence of painful points in the muscles (11 points, 18 that are pre-established).

Fibromyalgia treatment is performed through the use of medicines such as muscle relaxants, neuromodulators and antidepressants.

Dialectical behavioral therapy helps to maintain mental health in the face of pain

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, in 2020, Lady Gaga revealed that, in addition to the use of medicines, it is treated with Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) to remain “creative in the midst of pain.”

According to Cleveland Clinic, DBT is a type of speech therapy (or psychotherapy) based on cognitive behavioral therapy (TCC), but especially adapted for people living very intense emotions.

DBT is used to help people control and regulate their emotions and can be useful in a range of mental health disorders, including borderline, posttraumatic stress disorder, substance use disorder, depression and anxiety.

In the interview, Gaga talked about how fibromyalgia may be related to her mental health and the trauma experienced in the past. When asked by Winfrey, as she does to be creative in the midst of pain, the artist replies that, in addition to medicines, DBT has helped her.

“And also, thanks to something I learned from DBT called ‘radical acceptance’. I’m sitting here with the most powerful woman in the world. I had to accept that I would put my shame in a box that is right there [fora] And it would make her very small, ”he reveals.

“I say myself: ‘I have mental health problems, I take many medicines to stay in the game and I am a survivor, I am living and facing, I am strong and I will grab all the experiences of my life and share them with the world to turn it a better place,” he adds.
