FICO reopens in Bologna: how is the new “food park”

The Coronavirus emergency as an opportunity for revision and change. It reopens its doors FICO Eataly World – acronym for Italian Farmer Factory, one of the largest parks in the world paid to the agri-food and food and wine sector – with a new look (and a renewed mission).

It does so by putting in place a development plan worth over 5 million euros, financed by the shareholders Eataly e Coop Alliance 3.0, which transforms the original scheme – that of a theme park inspired by the model of Expo 2015 – in a “experience park capable of stimulating the 5 senses and combining passion for food and entertainment ”, quoting the new CEO, Stefano Cigarini.

Many novelties literally “in the field”: in addition to 26 shops including restaurants and street food kiosks, in the 15 hectares of the park now divided into 7 areas dedicated to Italian excellence – the Area of Salami and Cheese, that of Pasta, Game and Sport, Wine, Oil and Sweets – meet 30 new food-centric attractions (such as the installation dedicated to the relationship between ‘man and earth’ or the one on the link between ‘people and animals,’ by Focus) and 13 factories illuminated with strokes of multimedia shows to interactively tell the production of food (do not miss the projection of the Craft Brewery Baladin, on the processing of hops); and then one more fattoria with cows, rabbits, donkeys, horses and many other animals freely accessible at the park entrance (together with a farmer ready to interact with the most curious) and a “peasant funfair“With 14 rides in addition to the pre-existing teaching stations (focused on the meat, cheese, flour, bread and sea supply chains); all “seasoned” – it should be said – by the gastronomic proposals of 60 of the most important operators in the Made in Italy agri-food chain, from the Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano consortia to those of Mortadella Bologna and Balsamic Vinegar of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

“FICO is a unique example in Europe and in the world”, said Nicola Farinetti, CEO of Eataly and first promoter of the “Parco da gusto”: “I hope we can export as we did with Eataly, even if for the moment we have other priorities: fine-tuning the Fico machine, understanding how to involve customers, assessing the impact and satisfaction of innovations. One of the goals is to catch up with the visitors, that from 2022 onwards they should return to an average of 1 million per year».

The kitchen in the name of Italianness and regional traditions – from the Emilian tortellino to the Abruzzese arrosticini and from the Sicilian cannoli to the author’s ‘Molise fast food’ -, courses to learn how to roll out the dough or to knead pizza, the live performance of the Events Arena, i games for the little ones, it is sport between beach volleyball and basketball courts (which are added to an 18-hole monigolf course), but also shopping of food and household items in the market managed by Eataly (spread over over 2,000 square meters): all this is FICO, «a unique park» – continues Cigarini – «which tells about Bologna, Emilia Romagna and Italy to the world».

With almost 5 million visitors registered from 2017 to today and the11% of tourism generated in the city of Bologna in the last three years, the Fabbrica Contadina will reopen to the public next time Thursday 22 July 2021 (and 3,000 tickets have already been sold, along with a few hundred season tickets). It will do so by insisting oneco-sustainable approach that has always animated it: photovoltaic power supply – with a roof of 55,000 square meters in width, counted among the largest in Europe – 0 km catering thanks to the use of locally produced raw materials, advanced remote control systems, strategic recycling and the possibility to ride on comfortable “three-wheeled bicycles” with hydraulic disc brakes and wooden shopping baskets.

The entrance ticket del parco – located on the eastern outskirts of Bologna, in Via Paolo Canali 8, and open from Thursday to Sunday from 11 to 22 (Saturday until midnight) – covers different price ranges (but children under 90 cm in height do not pay): the most basic has a cost of 8 euro and includes parking, a 20-minute guided tour and multimedia rides; the ticket from 10 euro in addition, it allows access to the aforementioned Luna Farm, while the more expensive one, from 19 euro, includes a guided tour of 45 minutes and 4 tastings (or a course of your choice between pasta, pizza, wine, ice cream and mortadella).
