Ukrainian sources reported on Sunday (30/7) that heavy fighting is raging in the northeastern part of the country, pointing out that Kiev forces are holding their ground and making territorial gains in some areas.
From his side Russian Ministry of Defense he pointed out that he stopped the Ukrainian forces in the north-eastern part of the country. He also announced that three Ukrainian unmanned kamikaze drones had been shot down as they attempted to strike Moscow and damaged a high-rise building housing government agencies.
Its president Ukrainian Volodymyr Zelensky assured that yesterday Sunday the Ukrainian army had a “good”, “strong” day on the fronts, mainly around Bakhmutwhere Kiev says it is making progress, regaining ground it lost when the Russian army seized the city in May.
Ukraine did not immediately claim responsibility for the UAV attacks, however Mr. Zelensky said that the war is “gradually returning to the territory of Russia”, to its “symbolic centers”.
Russian raid hit a commercial building
Russian airstrike hit a commercial building in the city of Kharkiv (northeast). A fire broke out, however, no casualties were reported.
Mr. Zelensky also stated that the death toll from the Russian attack on a school in the city of Sumy (north) on Saturday rose to two dead.
Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hana Maliar said Russian forces were “trying to drive us out” of positions on high ground in the northeastern part of the country, which were initially captured but retaken.
As Hana Maliar emphasized, who expressed herself in front of the camera of the Ukrainian state television, the aim of the Russians is “to detach our forces from the region of Bakhmut, where we are making a successful attack.”
“They launched endless attacks this week. But our own forces are resisting and sometimes pushing them back, inflicting heavy losses on them,” he continued, as reported by the Athens News Agency.
According to Deputy Defense Minister Maliar, Russian troops suffered “no less casualties than when the fighting was raging in Bakhmut,” which fell to them after 10 months of fierce hostilities.
Ukrainian forces launched a counteroffensive last month, focused on the south, to cut off forces in the east from the Crimean peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014, as well as to recapture territory around Bakhmut.
Fierce fighting also raged around the Ukrainian-held northeastern towns of Kupyansk and Liman.
According to Hana Maliar, the Russian army is “persistently” simultaneously trying to “recapture” sectors on the southern front that were taken by the Ukrainians.
The Ukrainian army, according to her and as reported by the Athens News Agency, has recaptured 200 square kilometers in the south, but its advance is limited by Russian minefields and Russian fortified positions.
Russia’s Defense Ministry, in its daily briefing on operations, said its forces spotted and used rockets to destroy a Ukrainian armored force near Svatove, a key Russian-held town in the country’s northeast.
Russian troops, according to the same source, repelled four Ukrainian attacks near the town of Liman, further south.
The Reuters news agency notes that it is unable to independently verify the information given by the warring sides about the developments on the fronts.
