Fies renegotiation, message from WHO and more from the evening of December 31

The Provisional Measure that enables the renegotiation of Fies debts and the WHO message of hope for 2022 are among the highlights of this Friday night, December 31, 2021.

Fies Renegotiation

President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) issued a Provisional Measure (MP) that allows the renegotiation of debts with Fies, the Fund for Financing Students in Higher Education. This MP ensures that students are able to settle overdue and unpaid debts. According to the federal government, students will be able to contemplate a 92% discount on the outstanding balance.

child vaccination

The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, said today that the Federal Attorney General (AGU) will take a stand on the order of the Minister of the Supreme Court (STF), Cármem Lúcia, who ordered the federal government to provide information, in up to 5 days, on the public consultation for the vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 years against Covid-19. The public consultation is contested in the Supreme Court in an action by the National Confederation of Metallurgical Workers (CNTM). In addition to asking for the annulment of the public consultation, the Confederation wants the court to determine to the Union that the vaccination of this group is mandatory.

Growth in contaminations

A survey by the CNN Agency, based on data from the Ministry of Health, shows a growth of over 134% in the number of coronavirus infections in the 7-day interval. The comparison was made between the periods from 24th to 30th of December, and from 17th to 23rd of the same month. On the other hand, in this same period, despite the growth in the numbers of contamination, there was a drop of almost 10% in deaths due to the coronavirus. In other words, while from December 24th to 30th there were 756 deaths, between December 17th and 23rd there were 833 deaths.

WHO message

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom, issued a note of hope on how to beat the pandemic in 2022, in a New Year message. Adhanom said the world had the “tools to end this calamity,” even as new daily Covid-19 cases hit new records. However, Tedros’ optimistic post came with a warning. For him, the longer the inequality in the world persists, the longer the pandemic will take to end.

new minimum wage

The government estimates that, for every one real increase in the minimum wage, expenditure on social security benefits, allowances, unemployment insurance and continued benefits will increase by around R$364 million in 2022. President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) announced that the minimum wage will rise to R$1,212 reais from this Saturday (January 1st). The provisional measure with the readjustment was published in the early hours of this Friday (31) in the Official Gazette (DOU). The new value is R$112 more than the R$1,100 of the current minimum wage and corresponds to an inflation adjustment, with no real gain.
