The Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp) holds an assembly this Monday afternoon (16) that may define the future of executive Josué Gomes in charge of the entity.
This Monday’s meeting was defined by the entity’s president himself in December last year, as a response to a group of employers’ unions that had scheduled an assembly with the aim of removing him from office.
On the agenda of the meeting, the executive will be charged, among other issues, for travel and meetings in Brasília, in addition to the manifesto in favor of democracy released by Fiesp in August 2022 without the consent of the entire entity. “He will have to convince hearts and minds,” said a source expected to attend the meeting.
Part of Fiesp saw in the manifesto a disgrace from the entity to the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government – Josué is the son of José Alencar, who died in 2011, who was vice president in the first two terms of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
Before the assembly, the businessman should have lunch with the vice-president and Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB).
Increased tension
In recent months, Fiesp faced an intense political dispute. Josué is accused of being distant from the entity and from sectoral interest claims, which gave ammunition for unions considered smaller to start pressing for the executive’s departure.
He can only leave the presidency of Fiesp if he resigns or through a new assembly. An eventual exit, however, is not well seen by the entities of great weight in the industrial sector.
“This could affect Fiesp’s credibility and entire history,” said one executive.
Sought, the entity declined to comment.
command change
Heir to Coteminas – a company in the textile sector -, Josué took charge of Fiesp last year and ended a cycle of almost 18 years with Paulo Skaf as president of the entity. The businessman was elected on a single ticket.
Close to Bolsonaro, Skaf has been one of the main critics of the current administration.
Josué was even invited by President Lula to be Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, but declined the invitation on the grounds that he could not assume the position as a “defeated” at Fiesp. The businessman claimed that if he did that, he would look like a “refugee” within the government.
The names most likely to take his place at the helm of the federation – if he leaves the entity – are Rafael Cervone Netto, Dan Ioschpe and Marcelo Campos Ometto.
