FIFA bans Russia from using anthem, flag and hosting games

In response to Russian attacks on Ukraine, FIFA announced on Sunday (27) a series of sanctions on the Russian team.

The governing body of football determines:

  • That any international competition be held on Russian territory. “Home matches must be played on neutral territory and without spectators;
  • The member association representing Russia must only participate in the competition under the name “Russian Football Union (RFU);
  • No flag or anthem of Russia may be used in matches in which the Russian Football Union team participates.

The determinations were unanimously approved by the president of FIFA and the six confederations that participate in the FIFA Council.

“FIFA again calls for the urgent restoration of peace and the immediate start of constructive dialogue. FIFA remains in close contact with the Ukrainian Football Association and members of the Ukrainian football community who are asking for support to leave the country while the current conflict persists.
