FIFA, the most famous video game in the world, will change its name to ‘EA Sports FC’ in 2023

For almost 30 years, FIFA has been one of the best soccer video game franchises. Under the EA SPORTS seal created in Japan, the game stood out for renewing its version year after year; However, important changes are approaching, since the rumors that have been heard about a possible name change are already official: FIFA will be renamed in 2023.

As anticipated at the end of last year, Electronic Arts, the developer of the video game, ended its employment relationship with the International Federation of Football Association (FIFA, for its acronym in French). So the last installment of the game will be FIFA 23, which will arrive in July, and then it will give way to its new name, ‘EA SPORTS FC’.

Since October 2021 it was announced that the Electronic Arts company was in talks with FIFA, in which they contemplated the possibility of changing its name due to a disagreement in the negotiations with the sports organization.

Given the news of the labor break between FIFA and Electronic Arts, several teams and players joined the evolution of the project, so it was implied that the license they had with the Federation prevented them from growing the franchise.

I could tell them that we have fought for FIFA to recognize the kind of things that we want to create, because they say that our license only covers certain categories. Our players tell us that they want more culturally and commercially relevant brands in their markets, that are more involved with the game.

–Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts

Via a statement On its official website, the video game development and distribution company announced the news of the name change. In addition, they made this change known on their social networks.

After nearly 30 years of creating genre-defining interactive soccer experiences, we will soon begin an exciting new era. Next year, ‘EA SPORTS FC’ will become the future of EA SPORTS football. Together with our more than 300 license partners across the sport, we are ready to take global soccer experiences to new levels, on behalf of all soccer fans around the world.

– Cam Weber, Executive Vice President of Group GM EA SPORTS & Racing

The company assured that it will only change its name, since the video game will maintain the same experiences, leagues, tournaments and content that FIFA currently offers. What it does promise is that, as they are no longer linked to the International Football Federation, they will have more freedom to innovate and evolve the video game.

We are committed to ensuring that the next FIFA is the best ever, with more features, game modes, World Cup content, clubs, leagues, competitions and players than any previous FIFA title.

Given the name change and the freedom that the video game development company will have, there will be more opportunity to do what they want with their franchise. Thank you for everything FIFA, we will miss you!
