FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Fiorello: «A country where human rights are trampled on»

Fiorello did the summary, but the controversy about World Cup, out of season and out of place, it’s not new. The assignment of the 2022 event to the Qatar, made simultaneously with the previous World Cup in Russia, is 12 years old. It has been known since 2010 that the 2022 World Cup would be held in the country, but the approaching start of the event, Sunday 20 November, has sparked controversy and attacks.

The last to speak was Fiorello: «Everyone should withdraw from this World Cup. A country where all the inhabitants, “the Qataris” have written “Human Rights” on their doormats. And they trample them every day.” The showman during Waiting for Viva Rai2! he added: «All fans and insiders will be closed in a Fan Zone, in a restricted space, and if they then leave there they will be arrested. And we close the championship for all this? And did Rai spend 200 million to take the rights to these World Cups?».

Italy is not at the World Cup, it’s true, but accusations are being made from many quarters, even from those who have qualified teams: Rod Stewart he turned down over a million dollars for not performing in Qatar and neither Dua Lipa will be on stage at the opening ceremony. The reasons are known: an investigation by the Guardian has counted six thousand workers, mostly foreign and irregular, who died for the construction of stadiums, Qatari leaders under investigation for corruption, the rights denied to women and communities Lgbtqi+. Just last week Khalid Salman, a former player and now World Cup ambassador, called homosexuality a mental illness. Teams and players, especially Europeans, prepare forms of dissent: rainbow bands for captains, shirts in favor of human rights, families left at home so as not to bring income to the host country. Fifa, the International Football Federation, asks you to think about the pitch, but it’s really hard to close your eyes to the rest.

Fiorello pointed out things reported by many in recent years and months. «We have blocked our championship (even all those in the rest of the world with economic losses for many ed), the most beautiful championship in the world, to make room for the World Cup in Qatar. A country that is not traditionally football. When did they ever play football in Qatar? When was there ever a football championship there? Where did they play? In oil wells? There was no space. There were drills.”

The showman’s weapon is irony, but reality says that whoever wants to see this World Cup will also attend matches in stadiums with air conditioningotherwise the situation would not be bearable in the desert, giving a further blow to the health of the planet. Just the latest of the spots on a world championship that has been dubbed the one of boycott, but which boycotted, by football teams, will not be. The hope is that at least some gestures of dissent will arrive and that it will be understood that not everything can be bought with money.
