The Group of the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) that monitors the cleaning of the bands for the activation of 5G proposed, this Friday (12) another 60 days of deadline for the technology to start running in 15 Brazilian capitals.
Anatel’s board of directors will still need to approve this extension.
By the current rule, all capitals should receive the signal by the end of September.
But, due to the schedule of delivery of equipment necessary to avoid signal interference, the group recommended extending the deadline.
Now, these 15 cities need to be cleared for 5G activation by October 28.
Operators would then have another 30 days to turn on the signal, until November 27.
The extension applies to Recife, Fortaleza, Natal, Aracaju, Maceió, Teresina, São Luís, Campo Grande, Cuiabá, Porto Velho, Rio Branco, Macapá, Boa Vista, Manaus and Belém.
Brasília, São Paulo, João Pessoa, Porto Alegre and Belo Horizonte already have 5G operating.
This Friday, the 3.5 Ghz Band Obligations Monitoring Group (Gaispi) authorized the technology to be turned on on the 16th in three more cities: Salvador, Goiânia and Curitiba.
In addition, the expectation is that in Rio de Janeiro, Palmas, Florianópolis and Vitória, 5G will start to run by the end of September, within the current deadline.
That is, at the moment, the forecast is that 12 capitals will have 5G working by the end of this quarter.
“For safety reasons, due to the cleaning of the lanes so that there is no interference, it is better to extend it. And I’m still very convinced that by mid-September the vast majority will be released”, said Anatel advisor Moisés Moreira, who presides over Gaispi, not ruling out the possibility that any of the 15 capitals with an extended deadline will receive the technology ahead of schedule, depending on the work to release the lanes, coordinated by the Entity Administering the Lane (EAF).
“The assessment we have is that they are doing very well in the implementation of 5G. We already knew that this doesn’t happen so quickly, it’s a process that has several challenges. Some learnings, technical issues that will guide the rest of our country in an easier way”, evaluated the counselor about the process so far.
