Fight between Carnival groups caused the death of a delivery man in Rio; six were arrested

The Capital Homicide Police Station (DHC) arrested six men this Wednesday (3) for involvement in the death of delivery driver Ryan do Nascimento da Silva Santos, 18 years old. The case occurred in January 2023 in the north of Rio.

During Operation Puro Bicho, the Civil Police arrested Yuri de Souza Andrade, Playboy; Carlos Alberto de Oliveira Júnior, CL; Mauro Henrique Silva Pereira dos Santos, Maurinho”; Jair Rios de Medeiros, the Thousand Degree; Luiz Felipe Marques and Ewanderson Mattos Mendes.

The prisoners are part of the Puro Bicho batting group, which parades in blocks through the north of Rio. According to investigations, the suspects allied themselves with other groups that rival the Turma Beira-Rio, of which the victim was part .

The Civil Police also points out that the rivalry between the football groups led the criminals to meet Ryan do Nascimento and shoot him. The crime took place in front of the snack bar where the delivery man worked, in Bento Ribeiro, in the north of the capital.

On the day of the homicide, a second victim was attacked, but managed to survive.

In addition to the death of the delivery man, the group arrested this Wednesday is being investigated for other murders resulting from fights between soccer groups.

What are kickball groups?

Ball fighting groups are traditional in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to the masks, the members are characterized by thematic and colorful costumes, which present different views on the identity of clowns. They are also known for the stick tied to a rubber ball that they carry or umbrellas and staffs.

In 2012, the tradition was declared Carioca Cultural Heritage of Intangible Nature.
