Fight for Donbass will be ‘biggest battle’ of war, says Ukrainian lawmaker

The fight for the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine will be “the biggest battle” of the war with Russia, Ukrainian lawmaker Kira Rudik told CNN this Tuesday (19).

In a video speech on Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia had started the battle for Donbass and that Ukrainian forces would continue to fight a Russian incursion into the region.

“The outcome of this will have an impact on what happens to Mariupol, what happens to Kiev, what happens to Lviv, in every other city in Ukraine,” said Rudik, a member of Ukraine’s parliament and leader of the Golos Party.

“That’s why it’s so important for us to get all the support we can at this time and get it now so we can stand up and really win.”

Rudik also echoed calls by Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials for military equipment to be sent to Ukraine to help repel Russian attacks.

In an interview with the CNN Last week, Zelensky said the weapons the US and other countries have provided Ukraine so far, including the Biden administration’s new $800 million security assistance package, have helped his country resist the Russian invasion.

But he said more weapons would be needed, and that his country’s troops would be able to bring their forces into action quickly.

“This is a test for us: are we ready? Do we have enough weapons? Have all the weapons we were promised arrived, or did they just remain promises?” Rudik said about the fight for Donbass.

“One moment we are getting enough, other times we are getting nothing,” he added.

“Right now, instead of being upset with those who are not giving us what we ask for, I would like to thank all the countries that support us and say: give us more.”

“You see how critical it is, you see that we are fighting not only for ourselves, but for the entire democratic world, for all of Europe,” he concluded.
