Fighting in eastern Ukraine is expected to intensify over the next two to three weeks, the UK Ministry of Defense warned in a new bulletin released on Tuesday.
According to British intelligence, Russia continues to refocus its efforts towards the region, with a focus on Donetsk and Luhansk, breakaway regions that had their independence recognized by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The conflict is also expected to escalate in the cities of Kherson and Mykolaiv, with an offensive towards Kramatorsk, a city where dozens of people died last week after a Russian attack on a train station.
Russian forces continue to withdraw from Belarus to move towards operations in eastern Ukraine, the British ministry said.
Russian military commanders already signal a new phase in the war: an all-out effort to seize and hold parts of Ukraine’s Donbass region, which is still under Ukrainian control.
Authorities in eastern Ukraine have called for the evacuation of many communities, opening humanitarian corridors for civilians to leave for safer parts of the country.
