Israeli forces clashed with Palestinian militants in the southern Gaza Strip town of Gaza Rafah today, striking areas in the center of the coastal enclave where thousands of displaced Palestinians are seeking refuge. Residents in Rafah, near the border with Egypt, said heavy fighting was raging between Hamas-led fighters and Israeli forces, particularly in the center and western areas where tanks had been advanced over the past two days. The armed wings of the Islamic Jihad group and Islamist militant groups Hamas said militants engaged Israeli forces with anti-tank rockets and mortars. The Israeli army said its soldiers killed a group of militants moving towards them, and destroyed ammunition, tunnel shafts and infrastructure in Tel al-Sultan, in the eastern part of the city.
