Filecoin Decentralized Storage Capacity Exceeds 2.5 Exabytes

Filecoin storage project developers have reported that the main network capacity has exceeded 2.5 exabytes. The Filecoin blockchain was launched last October.

According to the developers, the capacity of 2.5 exabytes is enough to store 725 million films in 1080p resolution, 11,250 copies of Wikipedia and 47 copies of the Internet Archive.

Filecoin is a decentralized storage area network with thousands of computers around the world receiving tokens for storing information. Since the network is decentralized, data is not stored in one place, which reduces the risk of loss or damage.

“The importance of an open, decentralized Internet has never been greater. Reaching 2.5EB storage capacity is a turning point for Filecoin and the broader Web 3.0 movement, ”said Filecoin Project Lead Colin Evran. “The goal of Web 3.0 – to create a more efficient and secure network, free of corporate control, is finally starting to take shape.”

Recall that the Filecoin project launched a test network of storage on the blockchain last summer, three years after the regulated sale of tokens for $ 257 million. Then the capacity of the test network reached 12.9 petabytes. The Filecoin mainnet was originally planned to launch in mid-2019, but the launch was postponed several times.

The Filecoin mainnet launch took place in October 2020. However, immediately after that, the largest miners of the project went on strike in protest against the unfair economic model of the project, after which Filecoin changed the system of distributing rewards to miners.
