Filmmaker says in Cannes that possible abortion ban in the US is ‘insane’

The possible turnaround in U.S of a decision that established a national right to abortion is “completely insane,” said the Canadian director David Cronenberg when presenting at Cannes Film Festival his most recent film, which explores perennial themes of the human body.

“I wrote (the screenplay for the film) 20 years ago, but even so, you could feel that this was coming, this kind of oppressive ownership of (body and) control,” he told a news conference.

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to overturn the historic Roe v. Wade in 1973, paving the way for abortions to be banned or strictly restricted in 26 states, according to a leaked copy of a draft Supreme Court opinion earlier this month.

“It is a constant in history that somewhere in the world there is some government that wants to control its population,” said the 79-year-old director as he presented his latest body horror film. “Crimes of the Future”.

“In Canada, we think everyone in the US is completely insane… We think the US has gone mad and we can’t believe the elected officials are saying the things they’re saying over there. Not just about Roe versus Wade, but everything else,” he said.

In his latest film, Cronenberg continued his partnership with the actor Viggo Mortensen who plays Saul Tenser, a performance artist who grows new organs inside his body. Lea Seydoux make your partner.

“Crimes of the Future” is Cronenberg’s seventh film at Cannes, and the blood and horror have already driven viewers away from screenings.
