Apple will need to change the slots of its products sold in Europe by 2024, as the EU decided today to introduce a common charging port for mobile phones, tablets and cameras.
According to Reuters, the European Commission said in its decision that it will make life easier for consumers and save them money, after the companies in the market failed to find a common solution.
Brussels has been pushing for a single mobile charging port for more than a decade, amid protests by iPhone and Android users over the need to change chargers on their devices.
Note that Apple iPhones charge via a Lightning jack, while Android devices use USB-C.
Half of the mobile phones sold in the EU in 2018 had a USB micro-B charging socket, 29% had a USB-C socket and 21% a Lightning socket, according to a 2019 Commission study.
“By the autumn of 2024, USB Type-C will become a common charging port for all mobile phones, tablets and cameras in the EU,” the European Parliament said in a statement.
EU Commissioner Thierry Breton said the deal would save consumers € 250 million.
“It will also allow new technologies to emerge and evolve, such as wireless charging, without allowing innovation to become a source of market fragmentation and consumer inconvenience,” Mr Breton said.
Apple, which has warned that the proposal would strike a blow to innovation and lead to mountains of e-waste, did not respond to a request for comment by Reuters.
